ALiCe in wOnderLAnd!

Why is it sometimes difficult to accept the reality of uncertainty? The level of confusion may vary from person to person. Why is it that some people prefer a clear-cut truth? A black and white reality? And so I say pardon me if I say one thing and mean the other. If there is sarcasm embedded in my words. If I say I am happy yet I frown. I choose to remain ambivalent. Maybe it’s a good thing, maybe not. I know yesterday I said I wanted to stay but today I wish to fly away. But taking just one side I will not bother, because tomorrow I might feverishly fight for the other.

Quickview (A quick review): DON'T TELL PAPA

I was extremely smothered by the Korean dramedy “Don’t Tell Papa.” I am not a big fan of Korean comedies but then again what got me attracted to this is the right balance of tragedy and humor. Most of my affection for the film has something to do with the very young and cute Yoo Seung Ho. Oh, did I mention he is also very talented?

The film revolves on a very simple, even typical story. The film is about a good man who falls in love with the ambitious girl and knocks her up only to find out the next day that the girl has already dumped him with an extra package—their baby. The good man then works hard to raise the baby and the baby grows up and loves him so much. In pure coincidence, presumably, mom comes home and grows fond of the child. I guess you get the plot, don’t you?

Possibly what worked with the film is the excellent execution and performances of the actors. As most comedies, the characters in this film are not very much fleshed out—except Ho’s deliverance. Not many young actors can show a range of emotion as he did in this film. He was about ten at that time and now, at fifteen, has had much recognition as any young actor could ever imagine. Still, he is working hard to feel worthy of his new nickname “Little So Ji Sup” as he share similar features with the hot and critically-acclaimed star.

The film uses a specific soundtrack that makes it even more heart-warming. The excessive use of a particular love song in three different versions is almost very likable. This film is also loaded with smart dialogues, mostly expressed by Ho. The jokes are also typical but are very well-delivered. Though how simple and predictable the plot may be, the film never loses its consistency. Again, the keyword: execution. This is why tons of films are made with the same theme but are still loved like the first time we have seen them.

FIGHT CLUB: Blu ray Cover Art Review

And I thought the previous cover art versions were nifty? Another "Fight Club" cover art comes along, for their 10th year anniversary, now in Blu ray that has got me really excited and in fact, made me want to reminisce the movie again. "Fight Club" is a story of a boy, a man, of fights and of clubs. We all know it is more than the details I've mentioned. People who watched and understood the film will say that this is one hot movie that leaves a fingerprint in pop culture while not failing to incorporate the story with intelligent remarks and exposes on current consumerism.

The previous art covers include a pic of a pink soap with the lead characters nameless narrator, played by Edward Norton and Tyler, played by Brad Pitt. Another version is a sleek pic of a package, presumably packing the infamous "pink soap."
But what makes the new art cover appealing is that it really does its best to outdo the previous covers and in a weird way does. There are many versions of the new release but I've picked my fave (the large one). The gritty black and white paper cut slash photocopy-esque rendition of the nameless narrator with a neon pink, spray-painted movie title overlay definitely caught my eye. Added, in a white graffiti-like font, is a wildly favorite quotation of mine from the movie "YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL." Well, maybe not but this new cover art truly is...

I CAN DO ANYTHING...but what do I really want?

This is going to be quick. I was typing in Yahoo this phrase: "how to know what you really want" and I stumbled upon this amazing article and a fantastic site. Now, I just want to share this with you...

What Do You REALLY Want?

December 7th, 2007 by Editor, Pick The Brain

The statement, “You can do anything you put your mind to,” leads us to believe that all you must do is imagine what you’d like to accomplish, set your mind to the task, and wait for success.

To a certain degree this is true. Focused intention combined with action is a powerful force. But the statement is misleading because it fails to mention the difficulty and necessity of focusing your mind on a specific goal.

Most of us don’t know what we want. We think we do, but we really don’t. We only know what we don’t want. We don’t want a boring job. We don’t want to be poor. We don’t want to disappoint our loved ones.

Knowing specifically what you want is much different than knowing what you don’t want. When you only know what you don’t want, your intentions aren’t focused. Consider this example.

Pete doesn’t want to be poor. He’s sick of earning less than his friends, and he’s determined to raise his status. To accomplish this goal, Pete could take many different paths. He could train for a high paying profession, such as doctor or lawyer. He could start his own company, go into real estate, or do many other things that would lead to acquiring wealth.

But Pete isn’t sure what he wants to do. He doesn’t know which path best fits his skills and personality, so he doesn’t resolve to follow any particular path.

Hoping to answer this question, he investigates a dozen possibilities, but as soon as he runs into adversity he decides that path isn’t for him and moves on to a new solution.

Pete’s actions aren’t focused. Although he works very hard, his efforts don’t build on each other. Rather than building one giant impenetrable sand castle, Pete has built twenty smalls ones that are easily toppled. He ends up confused and discouraged. Ultimately Pete’s lack of focus leads to failure.

Now, what if Pete had chosen a specific path? Suppose he decided on the law profession. His actions would have been clearly defined:

  • Get a high score on the LSAT
  • Attain letters of recommendation
  • Get accepted to a good law school
  • Decide on a field of law
  • Earn a law degree
  • Find a high paying job with a good law firm

A set of specific goals is much easier to achieve than a vague end goal like becoming wealthy. Being focused on a path gives Pete a logical set of actions to follow. Each accomplishment is one step closer to the final goal.

I think we can all agree that committing to a clearly defined path, regardless of which one, gives Pete the best chance of becoming wealthy.

But how can he choose a path if he doesn’t know what he wants? Maybe money isn’t his only goal. Maybe he wants to do something he loves at the same time. Maybe he can’t afford to go back to school. Reality is complicated, and Pete doesn’t want to commit too soon.

And that’s why he fails.

But I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. Most people don’t fit neatly into a predefined path. Forcing yourself into one may lead to success, but it probably won’t make you happy.

This is the point. If you want to be conventionally successful, to attain wealth and status, you need to choose a specific path (preferably something mainstream) and follow it to the letter.

On the other hand, if you aren’t particularly concerned with wealth or success, you can take your time searching for that perfect niche.

Just don’t wait too long to decide. Each moment you deliberate, your already committed competitors sprint further ahead.

But, then again, maybe life isn’t a race, and maybe the most interesting people follow a path all their own.

Random FAVE things

I LOVE: (Part 1)

1. Britney Spears and most of her upbeat songs. People say she's an entertainer. I say she is, only plus genuis. I don't know why I like her so much. I am very picky with movies. I criticize the half-hearted and formulaic films that are so predictable. But with music, I love pop songs, dance songs, songs that doesn't require me to think much. Fun songs. This blog ain't really about her so I will stop now. I just love her and it is something I can never fully explain. Maybe it's the entire package. Ok, stopping now.

2. Pixar. I worship all of their movies. So excited to see the short "Partly Cloudy" (currently downloading).

3. Social Networks especially Facebook.

4. Friends and Family (God, I miss them. Di pa gyud ko kauli X-mas.)

5. Madonna, God of Pop. I have witnessed her reinventions and evolution. Say she's old but as the old adage goes "old doesn't mean irrelevant." She's the epitome of relevance.

to be continued...

THIRST: poster review

Why are Koreans very very good in poster designs? Will you take a look at this "Thirst" poster? It is very simple yet extremely striking. What better way to create a poster for a vampire movie than this? Plus, it comes in black. Minimalism at its best. The movie was fantastic as well. Watch out for my review of the movie.

The Gossip Generation

“Haven’t you heard? I’m the crazy bitch around here,” declares the ever famous or infamous Blair Waldorf to Georgina in The CW's hit teen show Gossip Girl. I am now an official fan of the show after I rejected it in its first season saying it’s just another teen drama mechanized by Hollywood T.V. moguls. Little did I know that the show had some style and zing and the cast ensemble is ridiculously good-looking and talented.

The show is about the residents from the upper-east side of New York and this gossip central powered by today’s myriad of technology: cellphones, internet and other gadgets that keep you connected all the time. Elite teens, adults and people around them live lives full of fun and zest. Of course, as the title suggests, this show has generated a lot of backbitings, sex, lies and of course gossips. Critics are saying it’s too lewd or it’s over glamorizing the residents in upper Manhattan. Well, in fairness to the show, I think I have seen some improvement from the first season to currently, its third season. Characters are more matured and fleshed out and there has been a balance of bitchiness and blessed moral values. And the interconnection of stories? Preposterous at times but it’s a ton of fun. How can I complain?

I can say that although most of us are not inhabitants of the eternally energetic New York City, the show reflects our lives and how much time we sometimes consume discussing about other people’s lives. Enter the gadgetry we have today which aids us to communicate to almost anyone at anytime of any day. Social Networks are sprouting everywhere in the web and we are forever attracted to socialization that is why we always sign up to these sites. I myself have a Friendster, Flickr, MySpace, Blogger, Twitter and Facebook account and to think I was maybe one of the three unsociable people in High-school. Now, I am highly sociable and very expressive, thus, I have a plethora of social networks, mostly established in the web. These networks help me see more of the world and of course, contact my friends and family. Sometimes, hard for us to admit, we abuse the net by talking about other people and situations they are in. There are already so many victims of social network misuse. These felonies range from petty crimes such as posting something bad about a person on Facebook or something much worse like killing just for some comment posted on the web. I would like to think I have learned my lesson well from this and wish that we all use these hi-tech social systems for the good…but a little fun and gossip wouldn’t hurt now, would it? Then again, maybe yes.

Yes, contest all you want, but we are the gossip generation. With no epic war or no life threatening issues similar from past generations, we sometimes channel ourselves into anything that will not wrap us up in ennui. I myself had been caught up with my lies and deceit and had a fair share of backbiting and volcano-erupting quarrels. It gets tiresome in the end though. At the end of the day, all you really want is peace. After all, you blame others for ratting you out but at one point you’ve also told secrets you shouldn’t have. We are all the same. As long as we always reset our moral compasses then everything will be all right.

You might ask “Who is Gossip Girl?” In the show, Gossip Girl is a cute, little, bitchy voice over. During one episode, almost every character wanted to get even with her and take her down. But they then realized that they were Gossip Girl. The accumulation of all the gossips they’ve sent to Gossip Girl gave her a life of her own. So they all make up, make peace and make something more fruitful in their lives. Or so I would want to believe. And don’t you ever say that Gossip Girl is just a girl. Even G-Dragon from Big Bang proclaims “Pay attention please. I am Gossip Man. XOXO!

Facebook Please!!!

It is no longer a surprise that I adore the social network "Facebook." I am one proof that some people do get mature and become more socially capable and inclined. As a Filipino teacher in a small city in Vietnam called Dien Bien Phu, I really love to keep things in perspective in order for me not to get bored. I often say that the internet is our only true window to the world and I believe this statement's "significance" is incontestable. Every time I miss something from my life in the Philippines, I rely on the memories that keep me positive and happy.

Fortunately, with the advent of texting, calling, voice and video chat, and social networks, we are able to get the closest thing to being physically unified with our friends and family, people that matter the most in our lives. It is no wonder that me and my Pinoy friends here in Vietnam are in utter dismay as problems occurred in Facebook in the past two days. "We are doomed," I uttered exaggeratedly. But aren't we? I mean as I've mentioned a while ago, the net is our window to the world and as of this moment, Facebook has been my clearest window to the world. I just hope that Facebook will return to its sanity soon before we lose ours. I've resorted to using my old Friendster account and opened a Twtter account to channel all my need for connecting with people. Still, Facebook is special and is irreplaceable for me at of this moment.

"Breathe in. Breathe out," I mindset myself as I believe that soon enough, everything will be all right. After all, they say that when life closes a window, it opens a door. Or was that the other way around?

Archives: Peace. Please

Peace. Please

Today, March 30, 2009, we just found out that a co-worker and a friend was unfortunately one of the many people who died in the Naga accident last Saturday dawn. We, especially the ones who knew him at work, were utterly devastated that we keep on kicking and screaming inside, asking why he had to go. He was a good man and I say this not because he already passed away but because he truly was. I secretly praise him deep inside by saying “Thanks” and complementing about the meal he serves in the cafeteria. Manong Rey was a cook in the school I am working at. Now, it is so hard for me to fathom the fact that he is gone. Still, I am trying to placate the physical and emotional violence that I’ve witnessed and feel. I grieve for Manong Rey and those who died and I grieve with those families who were left behind. As they say, it is hard for the one who leaves but even harder for the ones who are left behind. I, of course, cannot fully feel the pain of those people but I truly sympathize for their plights.

At the same time, I search within and outside me reasons for this randomness. I find some but they are feeble and they don’t hold up to logic. I pray for all their souls. May God bless them, I know He will. Understanding this event is somewhat hard to accomplish. Then again these are the times when we are being asked by our Lord to trust than understand. I trust God. I trust that he has reasons we may someday know. I pray why but I don’t demand for answers. As Truman Capote best quotes it “There are more tears shed in answered prayers than in unanswered ones.”

I was supposed to name this article “Violence,” supposed to scold and yell at those reckless drivers endangering the passenger’s lives. But this I will not do today. I am too hurt. There will be a time of dressing-down but today I wish peace and serenity even with the presence of grief. Manong Rey, wherever you may be now, you are loved by everyone here and may you finally meet our creator in Heaven. Peace out!

Archives: A Very Good Friday .

A Very Good Friday.
Today has been a truly lazy yet fruitful day. I say lazy and not boring because my family and I did a couple of things together in breezy, non-physically exhausting ways which radiated repentance. These activities include eating less (really less), praying, and watching a special live mass on TV.

The mass, aired by ABS-CBN, was unique because it was filled with special testimonies and musical numbers by people from different walks of life. Today is a Good Friday, a particular day in the holy week—the faithful day when Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Christians, true to its traditions and culture, were doing certain activities today like attending sober street processions, the ‘Way of the Cross’, a Passion play which is known as the ‘Senakulo’ and of course the remembrance of Jesus’ ‘Seven last words’. The testimonies were about those who have experienced the healing power of the Lord. A segment of the mass venerated on Christ’s last seven words on the cross. One portion caught my attention and it was about Jesus’ 4th words: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Even my brother and I cannot understand why Jesus asked this. I told him perhaps it was not a sin to ask God for our misfortunes as long as we don’t blame him. And this was supported by a priest’s sincere sharing of wisdom.

I am not ashamed to say that tears ran down my cheeks as I listen to the priest's story. The said priest was asked by some people during a retreat about certain calamities in the Philippines which ended the lives of thousands of people. “Why has God forsaken them?” cried a man in a group. Soon enough, everyone in the group started raising similar questions. “I honestly do not have an idea. Don’t blame me,” the priest jokingly commented on the group’s nosy and blameful attitude.Nevertheless, the priest shared what he had to say about the matter. “We are not the only ones to ask this. Even Christ has asked this to God.” Possibly, it is at first difficult for us to accept painful events in our lives especially if we are struggling to be really good. If we lost all we had, can we still love Jesus? This question is perhaps difficult to answer that is why the priest said that we are called to pray for courage in loving God. Why courage? Because it is indeed a courageous act to love someone when we feel that love has abandoned our hearts. The priest also said that God has never forsaken anyone. He has only wished for the best even if it meant for the end of us or our loved ones. End in this case is physical for we all know that we can truly begin a new life after we die once we are reunited with Christ’s love.

Things happen for a reason even if we never know or discover them. In the end, love and sacrifice were justified as Jesus’ truly accepted his fate. This is supported with Jesus’ final utterance on the cross. “Into your hands I commit my spirit,” surrendered Christ to his Father. To surrender our lives to God is not an effortless task. That is why we should all pray for wisdom and strength to carry the cross that we bear. I pray that we will always find inspirations to help us carry the crosses that we ought to put up with in life.

High-school was a difficult time for me. It was a particular time that I felt genuinely alone. I felt I was too different from anyone else and I can feel other’s hatred and indifference towards me running through my veins. But knowing Christ made that notion false and void. This was fully confirmed as the priest recited a poem titled “Yahweh. Here.” I will try to recreate the thought of the poem since I cannot find it in the net:

“When I was lonely, tired and weak…when no one would listen and no one was there to comfort me…Yahweh, you were here.”

He was here when I thought ‘Jesus Nowhere.’ I look back at that time, especially that time I ate alone in the canteen and a guy ridiculed me in front of the others. I felt like crying that moment because no one was there to know I was hurt. But now I know I had someone that time. He truly was there, sitting beside me and listening to the aches, the tears and the screams of the heart.

Now, when I experience a cold and dark day, I just remember three words: Jesus. Now. Here. A blessed holy week to one and all!

Archives: Bittersweets.

Bittersweets.
Yesterday was indeed a concoction of bitters and sweets. Manong Rey, one of our cooks, (as mentioned in the blog entry named 'Peace. Please') died in the tragical Naga bus accident which brutally took the lives of 13 people. Three days after we have known this fact, we still feel a tinge of sorrow—perhaps this is an understatement. Nevertheless, life had to go on in the office and we did our job like before but we decided to spice things up a little bit.

Miss Maricris, our academic director was stunned by a message that her friend sent her. "I'm engaged," says her friend. Maricris was utterly astonished since that friend of her never had a boyfriend since birth. It was later found out that her friend was just pulling a stunt because it's April Fool's Day. Provoked, but in a graceful manner, Maricris decided to pull everyone’s leg as well, with the help of yours truly and Michael, our head teacher. The stunts include telling everyone in the electronic grapevine (a.k.a. the net) that she’s pregnant, telling Michael she lost her cherry, and telling an HR member how disappointed she was with the rumor the HR guy was spreading bout her. Hilarious. But all these are nothing compared to the ‘Rena stunt’ we cooked up. Rena, our assistant head teacher, has had troubles with her romantic relationships (Cough! If ever there was any. Cough! Cough!). She sort of channeled all her hurts with that one ‘special guy’ into another guy she met in through text messaging. And so, we machinated this act that will surely take her breath away…literally. Mission: to make Rena hate us and even cry (even for a few seconds). Accomplices: Me, in charge of telling Rena the ‘hideous’ secret about her text lover, Michael, the one who will back me up by adding side comments to the set-up and finally the Queen of Practical Jokes, Maricris (who thought of this plan (I’m giving out this information in case you people say we are very cruel, at least you know who to blame! Heehehehe!)). Maricris began the play by letting Rena sit at the center of a relatively small room and allowing her to settle down first. She started telling Rena that since the Lenten Season has begun, we needed to ask forgiveness, as Roman Catholics, to those people that we have hurt. “We are so sorry Rena,” added Maricris with innocent yet devilish eyes. “For what? Why?” remarked the bewildered Rena. Every accomplice started wiggling guiltily (of course this was just fine acting). “We actually…Umm…ordered…So Sorry…It was Mike’s fault!” I stammered (another fine acting). I then paused and gave her the bomb “Your special text mate (or text lover) was Arnold.” Now, Arnold was a staff at our school in charge with keeping our student’s room clean and he was also an on-call technician, electrician and repair man. Aside from the fact that Arnold already has a lover, everyone cannot imagine Rena and Arnold crossing each other’s path with a wave of awkwardness. Why awkward, you might ask. This is because Rena and her text lover (which now is presumably Arnold) had been exchanging “I love yous” and other diabetes-emitting sugary-lovey-dovey quotes and endearment. Suddenly, Rena was completely crestfallen. She looked at every one of us and then she began to cry. Her face morphed into a dreadful formation resembling that of a rotten cabbage (okay overstatement). What I’m trying to say is that she cried and we were sorry but it was so damn good (Forgive our being an ass). We immediately asked forgiveness to Rena, only this time truthfully. She smiled and then wiped her tears. Rena was fine with it; at least her text mate remained a mystery. For her, it was better that way.

Night came and we went to the wake of our dear Manong Rey. There, we shed tears and grieved for him but thanks to the small talk the priest gave, we were optimistic to live our lives again. We were reminded that time that these lives we have are not ours to keep forever. Life and death is and will always be a package; a package that cannot be separated by any force here on earth. This parcel comes in two and from the moment we are given life we are also given death.

As I munched the ‘Rosquillos’ (circular biscuits) and drank the juice when we were at the wake, it dawned on me that life is truly strange. Like the ‘Rosquillos,’ life and death is full circle everyone must complete. There is always a time for everything. Good times and bad times collide even everyday and we are forever in the sequence of laughs and tears. I just pray that we may find enough laughs and smiles to forget all our tears.

Circus

There are many rumors circulating that Britney Spears will extend her ‘Circus Tour’ here in Asia, specifically in Pinas. I'm a big fan and I would love to go and see her even if it will cost me thousands just to witness her lip-synching, panting and whoring out on stage. But then again, I changed my mind when I saw a video of her in her ‘Circus Tour’ singing 'Piece of Me' (one of my faves) in a cage. The dancing, excellent. But the lip-synching? Dang, Brit if you're gonna lip-synch anyways, do it well! But hell no she didn’t. She forgot some lyrics to the mock rap portion of the song! So, I said no, I won't see her.

However, if she does really come to the Philippines, (no pun intended for ‘Piece of Me’) I think I'll reconsider. I still want to see her! You see, I changed my mind about the whole thing (rechange actually (if there’s such a word!)).

Britney is not just a singer or dancer. She's an entertainer. In fact, I compare her to a tourist spot. Tourist spots like the ‘Taj Mahal’ or ‘Boracay’ doesn’t really have to do anything for you to be entertained right? Silly me. So Brit, bring your Circus to the Philippines and let's all have some fun!!!

VIRUS

Some silly poem I made titled VIRUS:

Must be a virus
Kind of infectious
Also outlandish
It’s nothing serious

But like a virus
You are so dangerous
And you could kill me
You are outrageous

Your motivation
Exaggerations
You're my addiction
My skewed ambitions

You're hostile to my reality
You keep me in the realm of uncertainty
Overloaded with your creativity
Convoluted lack of physicality

You're an abstraction
A wanted fraction
Of this mundane life
You help me strive

You penetrate
You push and pull
I push you over
Still makes me drool

Propel me up
Just to yank me down
You make me laugh
Just to make me frown

You are so real
Yet so untrue
You are surreal
Don’t have a clue

Stunned with the level of your acidity
You’re nothing but just pure toxicity
Fill all the spaces of my vicinity
So sick of your senseless continuity

I know you’re viral
I just know so
Downward, I spiral
Until I’ll know

Know when to stop
Or moderate
What’s real, what’s not
I’ll separate

Can live without you
But won’t get by
Can tell the truth
Want to tell lies

You are a virus
You are, I know
But you’re so luscious
In my veins, you flow

Wait, I’m confused
Sure you’re a virus
With you, an A+
With none, F-

You can go
You can start all over again
You can try to find a way to
make another day go by
You can hide
Hold all your feelings inside
You can try to carry on when all
you want to do is cry

[Chorus]
And maybe someday
We'll figure all this out
Try to put an end to all our doubt
Try to find a way to make
things better now and
Maybe someday we'll live
our lives out loud
We'll be better off somehow Someday

Now wait
And try to find another mistake
If you throw it all away
then maybe you can change
[ Find more Lyrics on www.mp3lyrics.org/Mncu ]
your mind
You can run, oh
And when everything is over and done
You can shine a little light on
everything around you
Man it's good to be so warm

[Chorus]

And I don't want to wait
I just want to know
I just want to hear you tell me so
Give it to me straight
Tell it to me slow

Cause maybe someday
We'll figure all this out
We'll put an end to all our doubt
Try to find a way to just
feel better now and
Maybe someday we'll live
our lives out loud
We'll be better off somehow Someday

[x2]
Cause sometimes we don't really notice
Just how good it can get
So maybe we should start all over
Start all over again

Snippets of Hong Kong :-)

These are certain facts, observations, and insights about Hong Kong after my five-day tour in the said country:

1. Chinese people in Hong Kong are very good English speakers.
2. They are very considerate and generous in so many levels. (We were in GIORDANO, a leading HK clothing brand and bought 'pasalubongs' for our loved ones and then we asked more GIORDANO bags than the actual items and guess what? They agreed. This has not only happened ones but every time we asked for extra bags (even those expensive looking bags like LEVIS))
3. They move very fast. HK fastfood redefine FAST FOOD service.
4. Hong Kong is very clean--not one dry leaf lying on the ground and no dust and smoke emissions from buses or cars.
5. Prostitution is legalized in Hong Kong (OMG). Explains the very few hookers and pimps on the streets. (Bwahahaha!)
6. Chinese noodles are less salty there compared to the Philippines.
7. Many middle-aged people work in fast-food joints (unlike here in Pinas).
8. People EVERYWHERE are uber fashionable. (Pinoys are catching up, I went to Ayala the other day and man, I though it was a fashion show)
9. There are so many kinds of Museums: ART, SPACE, SCIENCE...
10. People in HK are very dependent on there Octopus card (the card they use for absolutely anything they purchase but is especially used as fare for transportation)
11. HK is my dream city (so far). It is because it is a precise mesh of things eastern and western--very urban, yet traditional and relatable. And skyscrapers galore!!!
12. Everywhere in Hong Kong is a tourist spot!
13. The weather in Hong Kong is very unpredictable. One moment your happy because the sun has shone and then two seconds later, it begins to rain. (WTF?)
14. You can haggle the prices (even with branded apparels) in market places.
15. Hong Kong captures you and makes you want to go back again and again and again.

MJ

" Have you seen my Childhood? Before you judge me, Try hard to love me. Have you seen my Childhood?" - from the song "Childhood" from the album "Invincible"

- Michael Jackson (1958-2009)

* I've just seen some of MJ's music videos and it dawned upon me that although I have never really been a hardcore fan of MJ, I appreciate his music now more than ever. I guess it's never too late. He did good things and he was a good man. Whatever he did, I know he had asked forgiveness and was forgiven. His legacy has not ended...it has just begun.

Death, as they say, is not the end. It is only a transition. Peace out Michael!

RUN

These days, I am in an absolute dilemma, caught in a web of confusion and non-sense. I just really don't know what to do with my life. So gone are the days that I know exactly what I want, now, it's just some random hullabaloo. Well, my dear mentor Madonna has always (or has she?) sung (well, at least these days) about taking the moment and living life to it's fullest in its best time...NOW.

She sings:

Time goes by so slowly for those who wait
No time to hesitate
Those who run seem to have all the fun
I'm caught up
I don't know what to do

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Ring ring ring goes the telephone
The lights are on but there's no-one home
Tick tick tock it's a quarter to two
And I'm done
I'm hanging up on you

I can't keep on waiting for you
I know that you're still hesitating
Don't cry for me
'cause I'll find my way
you'll wake up one day
but it'll be too late

- from 'Hung Up'

And:

If you want it
You already got it
If you thought it
It better be what you want
If you feel it
It must be real just
Say the word and imma give you what you want

Time is waiting
We only got 4 minutes to save the world
No hesitating
Grab a boy
Grab a girl
Time is waiting
We only got 4 minutes to save the world
No hesitating
We only got 4 minutes, 4 minutes

- from '4 Minutes'

Also:

What are you waiting for?
Nobody's gonna show you how
Why work for someone else
To do what you can do right now?

Got no boundaries and no limits
If there's excitement, put me in it
If it's against the law, arrest me
If you can handle it, undress me

Give it to me, yeah
No one's gonna show me how
Give it to me, yeah
No one's gonna stop me now

They say that a good thing never lasts
And then it has to fall
Those are the the people that did not
Amount to much at all

Give me the baseline and I'll shake it
Give me a record and I'll break it
There's no beginning and no ending
Give me a chance to go and I'll take it

You're only here to win
Get what they say
You're only here to win
Get what they do
They'd do it too
If they were you
You done it all before
It ain't nothing new

- from 'Give It To Me'

Finally:

You don't have the luxury of time
You have got to say what's on your mind
Your head lost in the stars you never go far
It's time for you to read the signs

On and on, on the beat goes on and on, on the beat goes
On and on, on the beat goes on and on, on the beat goes
On and on, on the beat goes on and on, on the beat goes
On and on, on the beat goes on and on, on the beat goes

My hand, take it, you can,
The time, is now, i'll show, you how

Say what you like, do what you feel, you're not exactly who you are
The time is right now, you got to decide, stand in the back or be the star

- from 'The Beat Goes On'

I guess Madonna has taken notes from Saint Benedict as her songs reflect Benedict's message of the NOW. Taking you back to the first Madonna sample I gave a while ago, a single titled 'Hung Up:'

Time goes by so slowly for those who wait
No time to hesitate
Those who run seem to have all the fun
I'm caught up
I don't know what to do

is quite similar with Saint Benedict's famous line:

...we must run and do now what will profit us forever.

So I have decided to RUN, metaphorically, that is. I encourage everyone to do so, too. We've got only 4 minutes to save the world, you know.

Light years!

It's been ten thousand light years since I posted an entry in this blog! I was so fixated with Facebook that sometimes I just post my blog thoughts there. Anyways, I was inspired by my dear friend Philip to bring the fire back in this blog! Thanks Phil! My blog pales in comparison with yours! You are a great writer and artist!

MY BROTHER LOVES MARIAN RIVERA AND KAPUSO FAMILY!!!!

I am quietly surfing the net when my brother KC GIMPAYAN, a TRUE BLUE KALUSO MANIAC harshly attacks ABS-CBN and its stars. He says that ANGEL LOCSIN sucks and that he prefers MARIAN RIVERA. I have nothing against Marian Rivera but it is unfair for my brother to attack the competition unjustly. Nevertheless, he is still my brother and I respect his opinions and ideas. I am not angry with him and to exude peace, i have designed and posted some pics that show how much my brother loves MARIAN RIVERA and THE KAPUSO FAMILY. This is because I don't want to engage any verbal war against him since sometimes my words are sharp and merciless. So KC, here is a montage of your love for MARIAN RIVERA! Hope you like it!

Tatlong Bituin. Isang Araw!

I now firmly believe that things happen for a reason. Francis M died for a reason: to inspire more people through his death. I am currently listening to his songs right now and it made me love my country even more. If he were still alive, maybe I would never had the time to listen intently to his songs: the melody, the passion, the lyrics which speak fervently for our nation! Because of the songs, my dream of working abroad to gain money has vanished. I believe the 'something' I am looking for is in the Philippines. First, I must be do things for my country, like what F.M. did. And then maybe, all the treasures that I am seeking, I WILL FIND. Peace out Francis M!

T2 (Tenement 2) Review

T2: Totally terrific
By Kenneth Gimpayan

“T2” or “Tenement 2” is a horror/fantasy film marketed as a horror flick. The film starts in a very supernatural mood, typical of Chito’s previous horror/suspense work. Claire, played by the diamond star Maricel Soriano, is in a very somber temper as her young husband asked for a trial separation to determine if they can still save their marriage. Claire is a volunteer of a foundation for orphans that help accompany the orphans to their respective families to different provinces in the Philippines. Devastated because of her plight, Claire joins Elias, played by Eric Fructoso, to a certain province to accompany a boy to his newfound family. Elias is a driver for the foundation. He, like Claire, is an orphan.

Once the orphan boy was delivered, Elias and Claire were slowed down with an obstruction in the middle of the road. Because of this blockage, they were forced to stop and stay in a nearby orphanage run by nuns. As they stayed in the place, Claire was surprised to know that the nuns assumed they came to the orphanage for a certain child to be delivered to her new family in another province. That child is Angeli, played by Mika dela Cruz. As they travel to their destination: Tenement 2, Claire, Elias and Angeli experience strange events that lead to a very haunting conclusion.

The story basically centers on the three main characters: Claire, Elias and Angeli. Claire, a middle-aged woman adopted by her closest kin, is clearly an exemplar of a round character as you can see her change throughout the movie. Angeli, the soon-to-be 9 year old female lead, is a symbolism of incorruptible spirit that each one of us have. Elias, on the other hand, presents a cautionary tale, especially for those people who holds burden from the past.

In the film, you can see the dichotomy of good versus bad people. Mid-way through the film, a thought-provoking question comes across your mind as Elias comments on Claire’s giving of ‘happy and unrealistic insights on life’ to Angeli. He says that not every orphan is as lucky as Claire, explaining he almost died because of those who adopted him. “Are people really good or bad because they are truly built that way or do social and environmental factors matter?” Elias laments his past and perhaps envies Claire for she was endowed with a rich family that truly loved her.

This is a fundamental example of a road film that I don’t see much in Filipino films. Sure, in ‘Pinoy’ films, I see people traveling but it is often presented in such a grander scale: having the lead go abroad and putting euphoric love songs in the background in scenes where the characters explore the places: Australia in the film “Love Me Again”, Dubai in the film “Dubai” and Italy in the film “Milan.” These movies are great but I was looking for something that is relatable to any ordinary Juan. “T2” was also not victimized by its scenery. Though the sceneries from Luzon to the Visayas were breathtaking, the film never lets us astray, focusing passionately on the story and characters. This reminds us that “T2” is not a travelogue, a point by point presentation of key places in the Philippines, but rather a top-notch, horror/suspense film.

In tradition to Roño’s nonsensical or maybe thought-provoking endings for his horror flicks, “T2” has really topped the bill. Of course he, the screenwriters, or those people who thought of the endings might argue and try to explain the details for the conclusion of the films but this does not apply in the real word with real people watching the movie. The three suspense/horror film endings by Roño elicit the same reactions: either fairly good or too bad. Nevertheless, since “Feng Shui,” Chito’s horror endings have been much anticipated and this, I have to admit, is immensely positive. On my end, I just thought that the endings can still be improved upon. The film also provides a fantastic twist. Some people feel this is a cheat though I beg to differ as the twist justifies the main plot. It is unexpected and this is why some people are not comfortable with it.

I am very much happy to know that Chito chose the ‘engkanto’ theme for this movie. There are many films about ‘Engkantos’ but I believe that in this movie, Chito truly captured the true essence of the mythology. This movie is the contemporary counterpart of Guillermo Del Toro's 2006 masterpiece "Pans Labyrinth."

I must say that the in-between rumor and funny lines courtesy of characters played K. Brosas and Fructoso was a bit off-beat at times, betraying the film’s supernatural mood. Fructoso’s character, Elais, gives some of the most brilliant and humorous lines in the movie. There are times when you laugh but you think you ought to be scared. There are also times when you feel the ‘engkanto’ set-up is just hoax but still there is something that makes you believe it. Nevertheless, the slow-burning, tension-piling factor of the film was terrific.

Some ‘Pinoy’ films can be translated to Hollywood. “T2,” unlike Yam Laranas “Sigaw,” cannot be truly adapted but only interpreted and this is more than reassuring. It is so original and very ‘Pinoy,’ thus, having an ‘unforgettable’ trademark. Still, it is watchable worldwide as it has universal themes and its overall presence can globally compete in world cinemas. The thing about this movie is that you watch it because you know what to expect but at the same time expect to see something new especially with Chito’s reputation as one of the countries’ leading, if not the best, director of the horror/suspense genre. With incredible top-grossing and critically-acclaimed films “Feng Shui” and “Sukob” under his belt, it is proper to say that it was a challenge for him to yet again create a film of a similar genre.

The casting in this movie is absolutely extraordinary. The three lead had an oozing chemistry that you cannot imagine other actors playing the role especially Eric Fructoso’s character. Maricel Soriano is ever brilliant and the newbie Mika dela Cruz is remarkable. The inclusion of John Lloyd Cruz and Carmen Soo were spectacular. Carmen Soo, despite people’s doubts at first, truly delivered a worthy performance. I did not even notice her playing a character, even if I knew she had a ‘special role’, until the credits rolled up. It was a very good move for Star Cinema to trust her acting prowess.

The technicalities of “T2” are legendary for a Filipino film. With the practical and special effects shots of the film, “T2,” is hands down, the most visually consistent Filipino movie so far. The special effects of the film is so ground breaking that you start for looking for animation loops and mistakes just to claim that its CGI. The editing is also superb, maintaining the ‘tension build up’ design of the film. In this film, Chito also incorporates shots that seem ordinary but fantastically eerie. Music and sound editing are also key elements in sustaining the suspense of the movie.

People are asking why most of Star Cinema’s movies are blockbuster hits and I think the answer is more than simple. It is maybe because of the companies’ reputation, the treatment of stories by screenwriters, or just a balanced and well-organized research team. Of course with directors like Chito Roño and a flawless cast, people are more attracted to these films. Now, people are dubbing it as the ‘Star Cinema effect.’ It is a great pride for me, as a Filipino, having these kinds of films and production companies. I just hope that Filipinos may not just consider the film company which the film is produced on but the true value of a film.

“T2” raises the standards in Filipino mainstream movie making. With first-rate direction, casting, acting performances and technicalities like the CGI effects, it is sure to be a memorable retelling of an old mythology with a Chito horror/suspense signature. Though the technicalities were excellent, it is the treatment of story and the performances that make this film unforgettable. The question if “T2” is a better film or a step-down when compared to Chito’s previous work is a complex one. It is inevitable and even necessary to compare “T2” to “Feng Shui” and “Sukob” but misleading to say that Chito turned 180º on this one. Let us remember that this is an issue of progression, not replication. And with this, I must say, “T2” has progressed. If you try to analyze the spiritual, emotional and artistic merits of the film, you can see that it is very beautiful and also well-crafted.

Some directors exploit their power and status in producing formulaic top-grossing films that don’t really have much artistic value. Some of them are very scared to experiment in other genres of films. This is why I appreciate Chito Roño because he used his influence to indulge on artistic endeavors such as “T2.”

Let's Begin.

Hi guys from all over the electronic grapevine (a.k.a. the internet)! I just want to say I am uber excited about my blog and I hope that this will be a very fulfilling experience for me! If you want to know the history of the title of my blog then here it goes: I am a big fan of Madonna, "The God of Pop" and while rehearsing for her "Confessions Tour," she asked one of the dancers about ART. She later commented that not only does she like art but "she likes to be the art"..."I AM THE ART," she says. In French "Je Suis L'Art." Thus, my blog is entitled "i.am.the.art." This is because like Madge, I also like to be THE ART. I feel that OUR body is ART itself, depending on how we use it. I want people to know that art is everywhere and I think that everything, when seen in an creative light, is a work of art. This is all for now and hope I keep this thing going on for like forever? Hehehe. Maybe. We can never tell.

How about you? Would you like to be the art?
